When Talent Isn't Enough
The gap between ability and performance in sport is almost never physical. It's human. I work with clubs, state bodies, and individual athletes to find what's getting in the way — and remove it.
What Gets In The Way
I've worked with basketball clubs, state sporting bodies, and individual athletes at junior and senior level. The problems are different in their specifics, but the underlying dynamic is almost always the same: capable people who aren't performing to their potential, and an environment that's making it worse.
- —Coaches overwhelmed by the noise — caught up in triviality instead of what actually moves performance
- —Athletes who are mentally fragile, focused on statistics and status instead of their game
- —Parents who undermine the environment without realising it
- —Referees and officials who don't see themselves as performers — and perform accordingly
- —A lack of consistency in culture and conduct across the organisation
- —Individual athletes who have the ability but fall apart when the stakes are high
How I Work
The approach is always tailored to the audience and the problem. With organisations, that might mean workshops designed specifically for coaches, athletes, officials, or parents — each with a different brief and a different outcome in mind. With individuals, it's one-on-one sessions that get to the root of what's actually happening, not just the symptom that's showing up on game day.
I go where the work needs to happen. That includes being present at games, training sessions, and environments where the real performance dynamics play out — because what people say in a room and what they do under pressure are often very different things.
What Changes
Results vary by engagement, but the pattern is consistent. Organisations report a significant reduction in incidents, dysfunction, and internal friction. Individual athletes who previously fell apart under pressure develop the tools to reset and perform — and the results follow. As the president of one club put it after a year of working together: “There haven't been any problems since you've been around.”
- —Coaches who understand how to create genuine impact on their athletes first — and use that impact to win
- —Athletes who can reset, refocus, and perform when it matters most
- —A shift in the environment that reduces incidents, dysfunction, and internal noise
- —Officials who approach their role like the high-performers they are
- —Individuals who understand their own reactions and have practical tools to manage them in the moment
“Our child struggled to manage his emotions and focus during high-pressure basketball games, which affected his confidence and performance. We'd tried books and podcasts, but he needed practical tools he could use in the moment. Working with Matt made a real difference. He helped our child understand his reactions, build confidence, and develop simple, effective strategies to reset during games — and even attended games to help refine the tactics in real time. The transformation was incredible. Our child shifted from spiralling inward to becoming an energised, supportive teammate. That representative season, he was the highest scorer across the entire age group. He's since moved up three divisions, is playing with confidence, and is even sharing what he's learned with others.”
